What is ACTI (Science, Technology and Innovation Activities)?

Science, Technology, and Innovation (STI) activities are much more than research. In companies, they translate into training, software, technological services, process innovation, and strategic management.

Recognizing and measuring ICTs is key to boosting productivity, competitiveness and sustainable development in our region.

Criteria:

  • Innovative: Higher education institutions (HEIs) generate new knowledge; companies make industry discoveries. Public education (PE) offers new solutions to meet sector needs.

  • Creative: based on new concepts and original hypotheses.

  • Uncertain: final result time and resources.

  • Systematic: planned and budgeted with process and results records.

  • Transferable or reproducible: allows others to use it.

Types of R&D

Basic: New knowledge of the fundamentals of observable phenomena and facts, without a specific application.

Applied: New knowledge with a specific practical objective.

Experimental Development: Based on research and practical experience, oriented towards the manufacture of new products or processes.

Basic: Research on the biodiversity of a tropical forest, without a specific application.

Applied: Development of drought-tolerant corn varieties.

Experimental Development: Manufacturing a prototype plastic recycling machine.

Scientific and technological services

They contribute to the production, dissemination, and application of scientific and technical knowledge.

1. Data collection for scientific purposes

2. Information services

3. Studies for policy planning and formulation

4. Feasibility and viability studies

5. Administration of the national intellectual property system

6. Testing, standardization, metrology and quality control

7. Technical assistance and technology transfer

Administration and other support activities

Types of Innovation Activity

  • Product innovations : a new or improved good or service that has been introduced to the market.
  • Process innovations : a new or improved business process for one or more business functions

Innovation Activities

The following are considered innovation activities:

  • Engineering, design, and other creative work activities
  • Marketing activities and brand value
  • Activities related to intellectual property (IP)
  • Employee training activities
  • Software development and database activities
  • Activities related to the acquisition or leasing of tangible assets
