Bootcamp for patent drafting with Reddi and Olarte Moure. April 2022.

With a total of 54 participants, both in-person and virtual, and 4 days of intense work, we concluded the Patent Drafting Bootcamp organized by Reddi and the firm Olarte Moure on Tuesday, April 5, 2022.

This Bootcamp aimed to overcome the myths and barriers surrounding patent protection and enable participants to draft their patent in 4 days. This draft will be an important input for the final patent draft and for participation in the Minciencias “Creating It Is Not Enough” call for proposals, which seeks to support patent protection for technological advances in R&D&I that promote the economic strengthening of the country’s business sector.

The bootcamp was led by Adrian Santamaria – patent project manager, Eddie Manotas – search and competitive intelligence coordinator and Alexander Agudelo – partner, from the firm Olarte Moure and was accompanied by Sandra Liliana Martínez Leon, representative of Minciencias at the closing of the event.

The Reddi and Olarte Moure Bootcamp used a theoretical-practical methodology and was held both in person and virtually on Tuesday, March 29,   Wednesday, March 30, Monday, April 4, and Tuesday, April 5 at Zonamerica Cali. The topics covered during the Bootcamp were: 

Module 1: Patent System 


    • Fundamental principles of the patent system and patentability requirements 
    • Importance and usefulness of patent information 
 

Module 2: Background Checks (Theory and Practical Cases) 


    • Identification of technological search criteria. 
    • Design of technological search equations. 
    • Use of free patent databases. 
    • Recommendations and advantages for using paid patent databases. 
    • Structuring of a preliminary patentability opinion. 
 

Module 3: Patent Applications 


    • Structure of a patent application (description and figures) 
 

Module 4: Patent Claims.


    • Introduction and theory on patent claims (theory and practice) 
    • Exercises in drafting claims 
 

Module 5: Patent Procedures. Filing and processing patent applications in Colombia . 


    • PCT – Patent Cooperation Treaty. International Phase. National Phases. 
    • Utilization of PPHs.
 

At the end of the Bootcamp, 19 draft patents for different technologies were produced by universities, individuals, and companies in the Pacific region. These drafts can be submitted to the “Creating It Is Not Enough” call for proposals or used as the main input for submitting their patent application to the Superintendency of Industry and Commerce.
